About Hamming Error Correction
Encode Hamming and extended SECDED words, flip channel bits, and explore parity syndromes, recovery and multi-error limits.
An error-correcting code adds carefully chosen redundancy so a receiver can recover information after a limited number of bit errors. Hamming(7,4) encodes four data bits into seven bits and corrects any one flipped bit. Adding one overall parity bit gives extended Hamming(8,4), whose SECDED decoder corrects a single error and detects every double error without attempting to correct it. The interactive experiment exposes both these guarantees and the failures beyond them. MIT 6.02: error-correcting codes.
